JOAO PAULO RIBEIRO

Bklyn Link:

Having been reading Sang Bleu for the past few weeks, i would like to show some respect for an artist which has caught my eye and been inspiring me.

Featured...Joao Paulo Ribeiro for his stunning, powerful yet simple photography.

The first thing that hits me is his use of film rather than digital. I would also choose film over the later format. For film, menages to express and convey that purity, realness and shear powerful substance that seems to get lost with digital. Don't get me wrong they each have there plusses and minuses but for me, the only way to truly touch and move the viewer through the art of photography has to be via film.

Film hits hard, pulls at some deep pain and always seems to give me a sense of nostalgia....keep film alive!!!

SANG BLEU I I I / I V

I would like to forward you this fine written paragraph by the Sang Bleu team, and not try to re-write it myself, for i won't be able to do it justice.

The following text will give you an idea of the depth and rawness from which this monthly mag is coming from...

"Sang Bleu was initiated in 2004 in London as an attempt to create a publication proposing a contemporary and experimental vision of modern culture and style. Rejecting the usual categorizations and segmentations, Sang Bleu’s statement is to use Art, Fashion, Sociology, Literature, but also—more unexpectedly—Tattooing, Body Modification, Fetish and other subcultures to create a carefully composed image of modern urban societies and individuals. Whatever their background is, Sang Bleu will reach those with a poetic mind and a sensitivity for beauty and take them to countries they never knew about".

How eloquently put.

Last month saw the release of this mag at Oto bar, just off kingsland road. I did go along and had to pick up a copy of the issue pluss 'THE QUEEN' Tee designed by Chacha.

I wanted to share this wonderful Mag, as it has opened many doors for me in my search for the right tattoo. Which will still take some time but i feel i am taking the right steps and doing the personal research needed, so as to be sure of the style which best suits and speaks to me.

WORD TO MOTHER @ STOLENSPACE...

Tomorrow March the 19th sees the opening of Word To Mother's latest solo show 'Lost For Words'.

Having been able to see a sneak preview of some of his work in the making (literally), i am very excited to know how some of the pieces have developed and been completed.

WTM has been delving deep in to some mixed media art forms from wood, canvas, found objects plus some installation pieces. Everything we through out, WTM will use as a tool for his work.

Take some time to check out this latest show and support a great up and coming artist.

EXACTITUDES

A contraction of “exact” and “attitudes”.

I got given this card from my girl on my first trip to Amsterdam.

Gabbers - Rotterdam:

Having done a bit of research. I have come to my conclusion; i think theres more to this project than what meets the eye.

Musulman - Casablanca:

Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek have been busy on city streets since 1994, both very inspired by dress codes and social groups. They have come up with the idea that if you register your subjects in an identical framework, very similar poses and strictly observed dress code. You can capture the way in which people seem to assume a group identity.
"The apparent contradiction between individuality and uniformity is, however, taken to such extremes in their arresting objective-looking photographic viewpoint and stylistic analysis that the artistic aspect clearly dominates the purely documentary element". Wim van Sinderen

"A direct assault on the mythic formula that photography plus the street equals authenticity". Henri Matise

Students - Beijing:

I mean can it really be possible to source out the same looking people with the same hair cut and completely the same style...Even over the 13 years that they have been working on this project, i still think it just can't happen. There must be a twist...or not?

I have an inkling that the whole thing is a set up and has been photographed in a studio. None the less it does prove a point and is certainly very inspiring to see.

Even when you think your totally individual...the only one rockin your style...the only one rockin your shit...round the corner there might well be your double.

TIME TO PAINT FAVELAS...

I was just informed by my girl this morning that we have been invited out to Brazil to help paint some walls. Exciting...i know....how about this...

"The dutch artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn embarked on a journey to bring outrageous works of art to unexpected places, starting with painting enormous murals in the slums of Brazil together with the local youth".

In 2005 a group of guys went out to Brazil to make this documentary entitled 'Firmaza Total', documenting the struggles of youth in Favelas (slums) in Rio and Sao Paolo. Having had such an immense response from the young community and seeing how they express themselves through Rap Music and other forms of Hip Hop. They returned to Brazil in 2006 to further their research by visiting many slums and getting a real sense of how the community works, while also planning a possible place to create a huge mural with the young kinds.

After a long process they finally found a spot in Vila Cruzeiro, one of Rio's most notorious favelas, and came to a conclusion with the kids to paint a boy flying a kite.

By 2007 it had been completed...

I really like the idea of giving power to kids by letting them express themselves through art and allowing them to feel a sense of worth in there communities.

Check out there website for more interesting pics and stories about the various projects that they have been initiating.
